  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message UGMD065 - &1 is used in the InfoCube and cannot be deleted ?

The SAP error message UGMD065 indicates that a characteristic (or field) is being used in an InfoCube and cannot be deleted. This typically occurs when you attempt to delete a characteristic from the data model that is still actively being utilized in an InfoCube, which is a multidimensional data structure used in SAP BW (Business Warehouse) for reporting and analysis.

    Cause:

    1. Active Usage: The characteristic you are trying to delete is currently being used in one or more InfoCubes. This means that the InfoCube relies on this characteristic for its data structure and reporting capabilities.
    2. Data Model Dependencies: The characteristic may also be linked to other objects in the data model, such as queries, transformations, or data sources, which prevents its deletion.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, you can follow these steps:

    1. Identify Dependencies:

      • Check which InfoCubes are using the characteristic. You can do this by navigating to the InfoCube in the SAP BW modeling tools and reviewing its structure.
      • Use transaction codes like RSA1 (Data Warehousing Workbench) to analyze the InfoCube and its dependencies.
    2. Remove Usage:

      • If the characteristic is indeed being used in an InfoCube, you will need to remove it from the InfoCube. This can be done by:
        • Editing the InfoCube structure and removing the characteristic from the dimensions where it is used.
        • Ensuring that any queries or reports that rely on this characteristic are also updated or modified accordingly.
    3. Activate Changes:

      • After making the necessary changes, activate the InfoCube to ensure that the changes take effect.
    4. Delete the Characteristic:

      • Once the characteristic is no longer in use, you can proceed to delete it from the data model.
    5. Check for Other Dependencies:

      • Ensure that there are no other objects (like queries, transformations, or data sources) that are still referencing the characteristic before attempting to delete it.

    Related Information:

    • Data Modeling: Understanding the relationships between different objects in SAP BW is crucial. Familiarize yourself with how InfoCubes, DataStore Objects (DSOs), and InfoObjects interact.
    • SAP Documentation: Refer to SAP Help documentation for detailed guidance on managing InfoCubes and characteristics.
    • Testing: After making changes, it’s advisable to test the InfoCube and any related reports to ensure that everything functions correctly without the deleted characteristic.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the UGMD065 error and successfully delete the characteristic from your SAP BW environment.
