Message text: Different product cost collector for the child order
When an order split was being carried out, a product cost collector was
determined for the child order that differs from the product cost
collector of the parent order. However, the parent and child orders in
a split hierarchy must be assigned to the same product cost collector.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
The correct product cost collector is determined according to the
master data in the production order. Check the master data in the
parent order and the settings for the product cost collector assigned
to the parent order, so you can determine and correct any
inconsistencies.

COOS038
- Different product cost collector for the child order ?The SAP error message COOS038 ("Different product cost collector for the child order") typically occurs in the context of production orders and cost collectors in SAP. This error indicates that there is a mismatch between the product cost collector assigned to a parent order and the one assigned to its child order(s). Here’s a breakdown of the cause, potential solutions, and related information:
Cause:
- Different Cost Collectors: The parent order and child order are assigned to different product cost collectors. This can happen if the orders are created or modified in a way that they reference different cost collectors.
- Order Type Configuration: The configuration of the order types may not allow for the combination of different cost collectors.
- Manual Changes: If manual changes were made to the cost collector assignments after the orders were created, this could lead to inconsistencies.
Solution:
Check Cost Collector Assignments:
- Verify the cost collector assigned to both the parent and child orders. You can do this by navigating to the order details in the SAP system.
- Ensure that both orders are assigned to the same product cost collector.
Adjust Order Settings:
- If the child order is incorrectly assigned, you may need to change its cost collector to match the parent order. This can typically be done in the order management screen.
- If necessary, create a new child order that correctly references the same cost collector as the parent.
Review Order Type Configuration:
- Check the configuration settings for the order types involved. Ensure that they are set up to allow for the same cost collector if that is the intended design.
Consult Documentation:
- Review SAP documentation or help resources for specific instructions on handling cost collectors and production orders.
