SAP Error Message - Details

  • Message type: E = Error

  • Message class: PO - Spooler message

  • Message number: 051

  • Message text: Reserve spool work processes for processing group

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

A reservation of spol work processes in the specified quantity has been
configured for the processing group for output requests described by
the parent node (The number 0 means no reservation).

    System Response

On this server, this number of spool work processes is used exclusively
for requests for this particular group. They remain unused, even if
there is no request for this group, the other work processes are
occupied and other request from other groups are waiting to be
processed. This value therefore implies a restriction of the number of
spool work processes available for other groups corresponding to the
difference between the total number of spool work processes and the
    reservation.

    How to fix this error?

If a reservation of the assigned quantity is not required to ensure
that the requests for this group are processed, the reservation can be
reduced, if the remaining work processes are overloaded by requests
from other groups. If there is an overload, but the reservation cannot
be reduced, the total number of spool work processes must be increased
in order to work against the overload.

    Procedure for System Administrators

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message PO051 - Reserve spool work processes for processing group ?

The SAP error message PO051, which states "Reserve spool work processes for processing group," typically occurs when there are insufficient spool work processes available to handle the print requests in the system. This can lead to delays or failures in printing jobs.

    Cause:

    1. Insufficient Spool Work Processes: The number of spool work processes configured in the SAP system is lower than the demand for printing jobs.
    2. High Volume of Print Requests: A sudden increase in print requests can overwhelm the available spool work processes.
    3. Configuration Issues: Incorrect configuration settings for the spool parameters can lead to this error.
    4. System Resource Limitations: Limited system resources (CPU, memory) can affect the performance and availability of spool work processes.

    Solution:

    1. Increase Spool Work Processes:

      • Go to transaction code RZ10 or RZ11 to adjust the parameters for spool work processes.
      • Check the parameter rdisp/wp_no_spo which defines the number of spool work processes. Increase this value based on your system's capacity and requirements.
    2. Monitor and Optimize Print Jobs:

      • Use transaction SP01 to monitor the spool requests and identify any stuck or long-running jobs.
      • Cancel unnecessary or failed print jobs to free up resources.
    3. Check System Resources:

      • Ensure that the system has adequate resources (CPU, memory) to handle the workload. If necessary, consider upgrading hardware or optimizing system performance.
    4. Review Spool Configuration:

      • Check the configuration settings in transaction SPAD (Spool Administration) to ensure that the spool settings are optimized for your environment.
    5. Restart Spool Services:

      • Sometimes, restarting the spool services can help resolve temporary issues. This can be done through transaction SM37 to check for any stuck jobs and then restarting the spool work processes.
