  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message CV705 - External number assignment is not possible for group & ?

The SAP error message CV705, which states "External number assignment is not possible for group &," typically occurs when there is an attempt to assign an external number range to a document or object that is not configured to allow external number assignment. This can happen in various contexts, such as when creating or processing documents in SAP.

    Cause:

    1. Configuration Settings: The number range for the specific document type or object is set to internal rather than external. In SAP, number ranges can be defined as either internal (automatically generated by the system) or external (manually assigned by the user).
    2. Document Type Restrictions: Certain document types may not support external number assignment due to business rules or system configuration.
    3. Missing Authorizations: The user may not have the necessary authorizations to assign external numbers to the specified group.

    Solution:

    1. Check Number Range Configuration:

      • Go to the transaction code SNRO (Number Range Objects).
      • Find the relevant number range object associated with the document type or group in question.
      • Check the configuration to see if it is set to allow external number assignment. If it is set to internal, you may need to change it to external if that is appropriate for your business process.
    2. Adjust Document Type Settings:

      • If the document type is not configured to allow external number assignment, you may need to adjust the settings in the relevant configuration area (e.g., Financial Accounting, Sales and Distribution, etc.).
      • Use transaction codes like OBAS (for document types) or OBA7 (for number range intervals) to review and modify settings.
    3. User Authorizations:

      • Ensure that the user attempting to perform the action has the necessary authorizations. This can be checked in the user roles and profiles assigned to the user.
    4. Consult Documentation:

      • Review SAP documentation or consult with your SAP Basis or functional team for specific guidance related to your system configuration.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:
