  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message CV703 - External number assignment is not possible for group & ?

The SAP error message CV703, which states "External number assignment is not possible for group &," typically occurs when there is an attempt to assign an external number range to a number group that is not configured to allow external number assignment. This can happen in various contexts, such as when dealing with document numbers, customer numbers, or other entities that require unique identifiers.

    Cause:

    1. Configuration Issue: The number range group is set up to use internal number assignment instead of external. This means that the system generates the numbers automatically rather than allowing users to input their own numbers.
    2. Incorrect Number Range Assignment: The number range group being used may not be configured correctly in the system.
    3. Authorization Issues: The user may not have the necessary authorizations to perform actions related to external number assignment.

    Solution:

    1. Check Number Range Configuration:

      • Go to the transaction code SNRO (Number Range Objects).
      • Find the relevant number range object associated with the group in question.
      • Check the configuration of the number range intervals. Ensure that the number range group is set to allow external number assignment if that is the intended behavior.
    2. Modify Number Range Group:

      • If you need to allow external number assignment, you may need to change the configuration of the number range group. This can typically be done in the customizing settings (transaction code SPRO).
      • Navigate to the relevant section for number range management and adjust the settings accordingly.
    3. Use Internal Number Assignment:

      • If external number assignment is not necessary, consider using internal number assignment instead. This would involve ensuring that the system generates the numbers automatically.
    4. Check User Authorizations:

      • Ensure that the user has the necessary authorizations to perform actions related to number assignment. This can be checked in the user roles and profiles.
    5. Consult Documentation:

      • Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for more detailed guidance on configuring number ranges and understanding the implications of external vs. internal number assignment.

    Related Information:
