The SAP error message C2312, which states "No more free item numbers (Please check)," typically occurs when you are trying to create or process a document (such as a sales order, purchase order, or invoice) that requires item numbers, but the system has run out of available item numbers for that document type.
Cause:
- Exhaustion of Item Number Range: Each document type in SAP has a defined range of item numbers. If all available item numbers in that range have been used, you will encounter this error.
- Configuration Issues: The number range for the document type may not be properly configured, or it may not have been extended to accommodate more items.
- Document Type Limitations: Some document types may have specific limitations on the number of items that can be included.
Solution:
Check Number Ranges:
- Go to transaction code SNRO (Number Range Objects).
- Look for the relevant number range object associated with the document type you are working with (e.g., sales orders, purchase orders).
- Check the current status of the number range to see if it has been exhausted.
Extend Number Ranges:
- If the number range is exhausted, you can extend it. This can be done in transaction code SNRO or OAVN (for number range maintenance).
- Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to make changes to number ranges.
Review Document Type Configuration:
- Check the configuration for the specific document type in transaction code SPRO (SAP Reference IMG).
- Navigate to the relevant section for the document type and ensure that the number range is correctly assigned and configured.
Consult with SAP Basis or Functional Team:
- If you are not authorized to make changes, or if you are unsure about the implications of extending number ranges, consult with your SAP Basis or functional team for assistance.
Check for Customizations:
- If your organization has custom developments or enhancements, ensure that they are not affecting the number range assignment or usage.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
