  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 5D801 - A new statement period starts ?

The SAP error message 5D801 ("A new statement period starts") typically occurs in the context of financial accounting or controlling modules when a user attempts to perform an action that is not allowed because a new statement period has begun. This can happen in various scenarios, such as when trying to post transactions or run reports for a period that has already been closed or is not open for posting.

    Cause:

    1. Period Closing: The most common cause is that the financial period (month, quarter, or year) has been closed in the system, and the user is trying to post transactions or make changes in that closed period.
    2. Configuration Settings: The system settings may restrict postings to certain periods, and if the current date falls into a new period that is not open for posting, this error can occur.
    3. User Authorization: The user may not have the necessary authorization to post in the new period.

    Solution:

    1. Check Period Status: Verify the status of the financial periods in the system. You can do this by navigating to the period closing settings in the financial accounting module (Transaction Code: OB52). Ensure that the period you are trying to post to is open.
    2. Open the Period: If the period is closed and you need to post transactions, you may need to open the period again. This typically requires appropriate authorization and should be done with caution, as it can affect financial reporting.
    3. Consult with Finance Team: If you are unsure about opening a period or if it is against company policy, consult with your finance or accounting team to understand the implications.
    4. Check User Authorizations: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to post in the desired period. If not, contact your system administrator to adjust your user roles.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as OB52 (for managing posting periods) and FB50 (for general ledger postings).
    • Documentation: Review SAP documentation or help files related to period closing and financial postings for more detailed guidance.
    • Training: If you frequently encounter this error, consider additional training on SAP financial processes to better understand period management and posting rules.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the error message 5D801 and continue with your financial transactions in SAP.
