  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WS348 - Run with name & already exists (see long text) ?

    SAP Error Message:
WS348 - Run with name & already exists (see long text)

    Cause:

This error occurs when you try to create or schedule a background job (also called a "run") with a name that already exists in the system. SAP requires each background job name to be unique within the scope of the user or the system, depending on the context. If you attempt to create a job with a name that is already in use, the system prevents it to avoid confusion or overwriting.

    Explanation:

    • Background jobs in SAP are identified by their job names.
    • When scheduling a job, if the job name you specify is already assigned to an existing job (active or scheduled), SAP throws this error.
    • This is a safeguard to ensure job names remain unique and easily identifiable.

    Solution:

    1. Check Existing Jobs:

      • Go to transaction SM37 (Job Monitoring).
      • Enter the job name you want to use and check if it already exists.
      • If the job exists and is no longer needed, you can delete or change it.
    2. Use a Different Job Name:

      • Choose a unique job name that is not currently used.
      • You can append a timestamp or user initials to make the name unique.
    3. Delete or Change Existing Job:

      • If the existing job is obsolete, delete it via SM37.
      • If you want to reuse the job name, ensure the old job is removed or renamed.
    4. Check for Job Variants or Templates:

      • Sometimes, jobs are created from templates or variants that might reuse names.
      • Verify and adjust accordingly.

    Additional Information:

    • This error is common when automating job creation or when multiple users create jobs with similar names.
    • SAP job names have a maximum length (usually 40 characters), so ensure your unique naming fits within this limit.
    • If you are using custom programs or scripts to create jobs, add logic to check for existing job names before creation.
    • The long text of the error message usually provides the exact job name causing the conflict.

    Summary:

    Aspect Details
Error WS348 - Run with name & already exists
Cause Attempt to create a background job with a name already in use
Solution Check existing jobs in SM37, delete or rename existing job, or use a unique job name
