What causes this issue?

You are attempting to maintain additionals for a material belonging to
the <GL:material_category>category</> &V1&, &V2&. Additionals cannot be
defined for this category of material.
At present you can create additionals for the following categories of
material:
<GL:single_material>Single material</>
<GL:generic_material>Generic material</>
<GL:variant>Variant</> (of a generic material)
<GL:material_group_reference_material>Material group reference material
