Message type: E = Error
Message class: VIRT - Virtualization Monitoring
Message number: 427
Message text: Memory Demand
On Hyper-V: this is the demand of memory of the guest OS running within
the VM (total committed memory of the OS itself and the applications
running on it) to meet its processing needs. If the amount of memory
assigned to the virtual system is lower than the memory demand,
performance might decrease due to increased paging of the guest OS.
This value is valid with activated Dynamic Memory only.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

VIRT427
- Memory Demand ?The SAP error message VIRT427, which indicates a "Memory Demand" issue, typically arises when the SAP system is unable to allocate sufficient memory for processing due to various reasons. Here’s a breakdown of the cause, potential solutions, and related information:
Cause:
- Insufficient Memory Allocation: The SAP instance may not have enough memory allocated to handle the current workload.
- High Workload: A sudden increase in the number of users or transactions can lead to higher memory demand.
- Memory Leaks: Inefficient coding or poorly optimized programs can lead to memory leaks, consuming more memory than necessary.
- Configuration Issues: Incorrect configuration settings in the SAP system or the underlying operating system can lead to memory allocation issues.
- Database Issues: If the database server is under heavy load or not properly configured, it can affect the memory available to the SAP application server.
Solutions:
Increase Memory Allocation:
- Adjust the instance profile parameters to allocate more memory to the SAP application server. Key parameters include
abap/heap_area_total
,abap/heap_area_dia
, andabap/heap_area_nondia
.- Ensure that the operating system has enough physical memory available.
Optimize Workload:
- Analyze the workload and identify any long-running or resource-intensive transactions. Optimize or schedule them during off-peak hours.
- Use transaction ST03N to monitor performance and identify bottlenecks.
Check for Memory Leaks:
- Use transaction ST22 to check for dumps and analyze the code for potential memory leaks.
- Review custom ABAP programs and optimize them for better memory management.
Review Configuration:
- Ensure that the SAP instance and database are properly configured for optimal performance.
- Check the operating system settings to ensure that they are aligned with SAP recommendations.
Database Tuning:
- Monitor the database performance and optimize queries that may be consuming excessive resources.
- Consider increasing the memory allocated to the database server if it is under heavy load.
System Restart:
- In some cases, a system restart may help clear memory and resolve temporary issues.
Related Information:
Addressing the VIRT427 error requires a combination of increasing memory allocation, optimizing workloads, and ensuring proper configuration. Regular monitoring and maintenance can help prevent such issues from arising in the future. If the problem persists, consider reaching out to SAP support for further assistance.
