  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message UGX2024 - Variable &1: Cannot derive the value of the parent fields ?

The SAP error message UGX2024, which states "Variable &1: Cannot derive the value of the parent fields," typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP BI (Business Intelligence) when dealing with queries, variables, or hierarchies. This error indicates that the system is unable to determine the value of a parent field for a given variable, which can happen for several reasons.

    Causes:

    1. Missing Parent Values: The parent field values may not be populated in the data source or the hierarchy. If the parent field is not filled, the system cannot derive its value.

    2. Incorrect Hierarchy Configuration: The hierarchy might not be correctly defined or activated. If the hierarchy structure is not set up properly, the system cannot navigate through the levels.

    3. Data Inconsistency: There may be inconsistencies in the data, such as missing or incorrect relationships between the parent and child fields.

    4. Variable Definition Issues: The variable might be incorrectly defined in the query or report, leading to issues in deriving the parent field values.

    5. Authorization Issues: Sometimes, authorization restrictions can prevent access to certain data, leading to the inability to derive values.

    Solutions:

    1. Check Data Source: Ensure that the data source contains the necessary parent field values. You may need to refresh or load the data again.

    2. Review Hierarchy Configuration: Verify that the hierarchy is correctly defined and activated. Check if the parent-child relationships are properly established.

    3. Data Consistency Check: Run consistency checks on the data to identify and resolve any discrepancies between parent and child fields.

    4. Variable Configuration: Review the variable settings in the query. Ensure that the variable is correctly defined and that it references the appropriate fields.

    5. Authorization Check: Ensure that the user has the necessary authorizations to access the data related to the parent fields.

    6. Debugging: If the issue persists, consider using the SAP BW query designer or transaction codes like RSRT (for query execution) to debug the query and identify where the problem lies.
