The SAP error message UGMD039 indicates that a characteristic (denoted by &1) is being used in a specific BW (Business Warehouse) object (denoted by &4) and cannot be deleted. This typically occurs when you attempt to delete a characteristic that is still in use in various BW objects, such as InfoObjects, InfoCubes, or DataStore Objects.

    Cause:

    1. Usage in BW Objects: The characteristic you are trying to delete is actively being used in one or more BW objects. This could include:

      • InfoObjects
      • InfoCubes
      • DataStore Objects (DSOs)
      • Queries
      • Transformations
      • DataSources
    2. Dependencies: There may be dependencies or relationships that prevent the deletion of the characteristic. This includes being part of a composite key or being referenced in other BW structures.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, you need to identify where the characteristic is being used and take appropriate actions:

    1. Check Usage:

      • Use transaction codes like RSA1 (Data Warehousing Workbench) to check the usage of the characteristic.
      • Look for the characteristic in InfoObjects, InfoCubes, and other BW objects.
    2. Remove Dependencies:

      • If the characteristic is used in any InfoObjects, queries, or transformations, you will need to remove it from those objects first.
      • This may involve modifying queries, deleting or adjusting InfoObjects, or changing transformations that reference the characteristic.
    3. Delete or Deactivate:

      • Once you have removed all dependencies, you can proceed to delete the characteristic.
      • Alternatively, if you do not want to delete it permanently, consider deactivating it instead.
    4. Transport Requests:

      • If you are working in a development environment, ensure that any changes are included in transport requests for proper migration to production.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as:
      • RSA1 for Data Warehousing Workbench
      • SE11 for Data Dictionary
      • SE80 for Object Navigator
    • Documentation: Review SAP documentation or help files related to BW characteristics and InfoObjects for more detailed guidance on managing dependencies.
    • Testing: After making changes, ensure to test the BW objects to confirm that they function correctly without the deleted characteristic.
