Message number: 637
Message text: Number of released jobs that are waiting to be executed
Number of released jobs on an application server that are to be
executed, but for which there are no free background work processes.
The two nodes <LS>Utilization</> and <LS>ServerSpecificQueueLength
</> display whether there is a serious bottleneck in background
processing. The optimal situation is a high usage and a small queue
length.
A high usage and high values for the length of the wait queue show that
your system could not fulfill the background processing demand during
the alert period.
If <LS>Utilization</> and <LS>ServerSpecificQueueLength</> repeatedly
raise alerts, you should increase the background processing capacity:
Set the number of work processes for background processing with the
system parameter <LS>rdisp/wp_no_btc</>.
For more information about this topic, see SAP Note 39412 (How many
work processes to configure).
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

RT637
- Number of released jobs that are waiting to be executed ?The SAP error message RT637 indicates that there are too many jobs that have been released and are currently waiting to be executed in the system. This can occur in environments where job scheduling is heavily utilized, and it can lead to performance issues or delays in job execution.
Cause:
- High Job Volume: A large number of jobs have been scheduled and released, exceeding the system's capacity to process them concurrently.
- System Configuration: The system may not be optimally configured to handle the volume of jobs, such as insufficient background processing capacity.
- Resource Constraints: Limited system resources (CPU, memory, etc.) can lead to delays in job execution.
- Job Dependencies: Some jobs may be waiting for other jobs to complete before they can start, leading to a backlog.
- Scheduling Conflicts: Jobs may be scheduled at the same time, causing contention for resources.
Solution:
- Monitor Job Status: Use transaction codes like
SM37
to monitor the status of jobs. Identify jobs that are stuck or have failed and take appropriate action.- Adjust Job Scheduling: Stagger job releases to avoid overwhelming the system. Consider scheduling jobs during off-peak hours.
- Increase Background Processing Capacity: If possible, increase the number of background work processes in the system configuration (transaction
RZ10
orRZ03
).- Optimize Job Dependencies: Review job dependencies and ensure that jobs are not unnecessarily waiting for others to complete.
- Review System Resources: Check system performance metrics to identify any bottlenecks. If necessary, consider upgrading hardware or optimizing system settings.
- Clean Up Old Jobs: Regularly review and delete old or unnecessary jobs that may be clogging the job queue.
