RT639
- Cross-system number of background work processes for high priority jobs ?The SAP error message RT639 indicates that there is a configuration issue related to the number of background work processes available for high-priority jobs across different systems in a distributed environment. This error typically arises when the system is unable to allocate sufficient background work processes to handle high-priority jobs, which can lead to delays or failures in job execution.
Cause:
- Insufficient Background Work Processes: The number of background work processes configured in the system may be too low to handle the volume of high-priority jobs.
- Cross-System Configuration: In a landscape with multiple SAP systems (e.g., Development, Quality Assurance, Production), the configuration for background processing may not be consistent or optimal across these systems.
- Job Priority Settings: High-priority jobs may be competing for limited resources, leading to contention and the inability to execute jobs in a timely manner.
- System Load: The overall load on the system may be high, causing delays in job processing.
Solution:
Increase Background Work Processes:
- Go to transaction RZ10 to adjust the profile parameters for background work processes. Look for the parameter
rdisp/wp_no_btc
and increase its value to allow more background work processes.- After making changes, restart the instance for the changes to take effect.
Review Job Priority Settings:
- Check the priority settings of the jobs in transaction SM37 (Job Monitoring). Ensure that high-priority jobs are correctly configured and that their priority is set appropriately.
Optimize Job Scheduling:
- Schedule high-priority jobs during off-peak hours to reduce contention for resources.
- Use transaction SM36 to manage job scheduling and ensure that jobs are distributed evenly across available work processes.
Monitor System Performance:
- Use transaction ST03N to analyze system performance and identify bottlenecks. This can help in understanding if the system is under heavy load and if additional resources are needed.
Cross-System Configuration:
- Ensure that the configuration for background processing is consistent across all systems in the landscape. This includes checking the number of work processes and their distribution.
Consult SAP Notes:
- Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may provide additional guidance or patches related to this error message.
