    This combination of material number and serial number already exists in
    the system. The message can occur in the following scenarios:
    If you are performing a serial number update for already existing
    equipment
    If you enter an existing serial number in the 'load template' scenario

    The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

    System Response

    System issues a warning or error message:
    Warning - Equipment cannot be updated with the new serial number as the
    serial number already exists and is assigned to another piece of
    equipment in the system. The system overwrites the entered serial number
    with the original value.
    Error - Serial number exists in the system and must not be used for the
    selected entry.

    How to fix this error?

    Correct your entries, or if the existing serial number needs to be used
    in 'load template' scenario anyway do one of the following:
    Enter the corresponding equipment number into the equipment number field
    Use delete function to remove the 'to be created' equipment from the
    navigation tree and replace it with the existing piece of equipment in
    the system by choosing Insert Object
