Message text: The period intervals overlap
The period intervals overlap for the entries with
Controlling area = &V1&,
Fiscal year = &V2& and
Cost element = &V3&
This is not permitted.
If two rows are identical apart from the period interval and the
percentage, such as
000 AAAA yyyy 420000 09 12 10.0
000 AAAA yyyy 420000 11 12 5.0
the period intervals (09,12) and (11,12) must not be joined.
This means: No value from one interval is allowed to appear
simultaneously in the other interval. The error here has occurred becaus
e of an overlap. Periods 11 and 12 appear in both intervals.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
Correct your entries so that the period intervals that contain the same
controlling area, fiscal year, and cost element are disjoint.

KT189
- The period intervals overlap ?The SAP error message KT189, which states "The period intervals overlap," typically occurs in the context of controlling (CO) when you are trying to create or modify a cost center, internal order, or other controlling objects that have defined validity periods. This error indicates that the date ranges you are trying to set for a particular object overlap with existing date ranges for that object or other related objects.
Cause:
The error is caused by the following scenarios:
- Overlapping Validity Periods: You are attempting to create or change a record with a validity period that overlaps with an existing record's validity period.
- Incorrect Date Entries: The start and end dates you have entered may not be set correctly, leading to overlaps.
- Multiple Records: There may be multiple records for the same object that have overlapping periods.
Solution:
To resolve the KT189 error, you can take the following steps:
Check Existing Records:
- Review the existing records for the object you are trying to create or modify. Look for any records that have overlapping validity periods.
- You can use transaction codes like
KS01
(Create Cost Center),KO01
(Create Internal Order), or relevant transaction codes for your specific object to check existing entries.Adjust Validity Periods:
- If you find overlapping periods, you will need to adjust the start and end dates of the records to ensure that they do not overlap.
- You can either change the existing records or delete them if they are no longer needed.
Use Non-Overlapping Dates:
- When creating or modifying a record, ensure that the dates you enter do not overlap with any existing records. For example, if an existing record is valid from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, you cannot create a new record with a validity period that starts or ends within that range.
Consult Documentation:
- If you are unsure about the validity periods or how to manage them, refer to SAP documentation or consult with your SAP administrator for guidance.
Testing:
- After making the necessary adjustments, try to create or modify the record again to see if the error persists.
