  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message KI288 - Corresponding CO document cannot be reversed because of archiving ?

The SAP error message KI288 indicates that a corresponding Controlling (CO) document cannot be reversed due to archiving. This typically occurs when you attempt to reverse a CO document (like a cost center accounting document) that has been archived, meaning that the original document is no longer available in the active database.

    Cause:

    1. Archiving: The primary cause of this error is that the CO document you are trying to reverse has been archived. Archiving is a process in SAP that moves data from the active database to an archive to improve system performance and manage data volume.
    2. Document Status: The document may have been processed in such a way that it is no longer available for reversal due to its archived status.

    Solution:

    1. Check Archiving Status: Verify if the document you are trying to reverse has indeed been archived. You can do this by checking the archiving logs or using transaction codes like SARA (Archive Administration) to see the status of archived documents.
    2. Restore Document: If the document is archived and you need to reverse it, you may need to restore the document from the archive. This typically requires administrative access and may involve using specific SAP tools or processes to retrieve the archived data.
    3. Alternative Actions: If restoring the document is not feasible, consider alternative actions such as:
      • Creating a new document to correct the previous entries.
      • Consulting with your SAP Basis or CO team to understand the implications of restoring archived data and to explore other options.
    4. Review Archiving Policies: If this issue occurs frequently, it may be worth reviewing your organization's archiving policies and procedures to ensure that they align with business needs and that critical documents are not archived prematurely.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with transaction codes related to archiving (e.g., SARA for archiving administration, SARI for restoring archived data).
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may provide additional guidance or updates related to this error message.
    • Documentation: Review SAP documentation on CO document processing and archiving to understand the implications of archiving on document reversals.

If you continue to face issues or if the situation is complex, it may be beneficial to consult with your SAP support team or a professional with expertise in SAP CO module and data archiving.
