  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message IX083 - Contact person cannot be deleted because used in &1 PM objects ?

The SAP error message IX083 indicates that a contact person cannot be deleted because it is still being referenced in one or more PM (Plant Maintenance) objects. This typically occurs when the contact person is linked to maintenance orders, notifications, or other related objects within the SAP system.

    Cause:

The primary cause of this error is that the contact person you are trying to delete is still associated with active or existing PM objects. SAP enforces data integrity, which means that you cannot delete records that are still in use to prevent orphaned references or inconsistencies in the database.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, you can follow these steps:

    1. Identify the PM Objects:

      • Check the specific PM objects that are using the contact person. The error message usually indicates the number of objects (e.g., maintenance orders, notifications) that are still linked to the contact person.
      • You can use transaction codes like IW38 (for maintenance orders) or IW28 (for notifications) to search for any existing records that reference the contact person.
    2. Remove the Contact Person from PM Objects:

      • Once you have identified the PM objects, you need to either remove the contact person from these objects or change the contact person to another valid one.
      • Open each relevant PM object and navigate to the section where the contact person is assigned. Remove or change the contact person as necessary.
    3. Delete the Contact Person:

      • After ensuring that the contact person is no longer referenced in any PM objects, you can attempt to delete the contact person again.
      • Use the appropriate transaction (e.g., transaction code BP for Business Partner) to delete the contact person.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as:

      • IW38: Change PM Orders
      • IW28: Change PM Notifications
      • BP: Business Partner (for managing contact persons)
    • Data Integrity: Understand that SAP maintains strict data integrity rules, and always ensure that you are not leaving orphaned references when deleting records.

    • User Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to make changes to PM objects and delete contact persons.

    • Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help files for more detailed instructions on managing contact persons and PM objects.
