  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message COM_PRODUCT_CUSTMSG021 - Only attribute lengths of up to 26 characters are permitted ?

The SAP error message COM_PRODUCT_CUSTMSG021 indicates that there is an issue with the length of an attribute in a product master data record. Specifically, it states that only attribute lengths of up to 26 characters are permitted, and you are likely trying to input an attribute that exceeds this limit.

    Cause:

    1. Attribute Length Exceeded: The most common cause of this error is that one or more attributes of the product you are trying to create or update have values that exceed the maximum allowed length of 26 characters.
    2. Data Entry Error: It could also be a result of incorrect data entry where a user inadvertently inputs a longer string than allowed.
    3. Configuration Issues: In some cases, the configuration of the product attributes in the SAP system may not align with the expected lengths.

    Solution:

    1. Check Attribute Values: Review the values you are trying to input for the product attributes. Ensure that none of them exceed the 26-character limit.
    2. Trim Values: If you find any attribute values that exceed the limit, you will need to either shorten them or modify them to fit within the allowed length.
    3. Validation: Implement validation checks in your data entry process to prevent users from entering values that exceed the character limit in the future.
    4. Review Configuration: If you believe the attribute should allow for longer values, check the configuration settings in the SAP system to see if they can be adjusted. However, this may require consulting with your SAP administrator or a technical consultant.

    Related Information:

    • SAP Documentation: Refer to the SAP Help Portal or the specific documentation for your version of SAP to understand the limitations and configurations for product attributes.
    • Transaction Codes: You may need to use transaction codes like MM01 (Create Material) or MM02 (Change Material) to access the product master data and make necessary adjustments.
    • User Exits or BAdIs: If you are frequently encountering this issue, consider implementing user exits or Business Add-Ins (BAdIs) to enforce attribute length checks programmatically.

By addressing the attribute length issue, you should be able to resolve the error and successfully create or update the product in SAP.
