  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message BRAIN186 - Exception aggregation ignored; &2 has no fixed time characteristic ?

The SAP error message BRAIN186, which states "Exception aggregation ignored; &2 has no fixed time characteristic," typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP BI (Business Intelligence) when you are trying to perform an aggregation operation on a query or report that requires a fixed time characteristic, but the characteristic in question does not meet that requirement.

    Cause:

    1. Missing Fixed Time Characteristic: The characteristic you are trying to aggregate does not have a fixed time characteristic associated with it. In SAP BW, fixed time characteristics are essential for time-based aggregations.
    2. Incorrect Query Design: The query may be designed in such a way that it does not include a time dimension or the time dimension is not properly defined.
    3. Data Model Issues: There may be issues with the underlying data model, such as missing or incorrectly configured InfoObjects or InfoProviders.

    Solution:

    1. Check Query Design:

      • Open the query in the Query Designer.
      • Ensure that a fixed time characteristic (like 0CALMONTH, 0CALYEAR, etc.) is included in the query.
      • If necessary, add a time characteristic to the query.
    2. Review InfoObjects:

      • Go to the InfoObjects in the Data Warehousing Workbench.
      • Check if the characteristic you are using is defined as a time characteristic. If it is not, you may need to create a new InfoObject that is a fixed time characteristic.
    3. Adjust Aggregation Settings:

      • If you are using exception aggregation, ensure that the settings are correctly configured to use a fixed time characteristic.
      • Review the aggregation settings in the query properties and adjust them as needed.
    4. Data Model Validation:

      • Validate the data model to ensure that all necessary characteristics and key figures are correctly defined and linked.
      • Check for any inconsistencies in the data model that might affect the aggregation.
    5. Testing:

      • After making the necessary changes, test the query again to see if the error persists.
