Message text: The maximum number of distribution rules has been exceeded
The settlement profile that is assigned to the settlement rule of the
sender object allows a maximum of &v1& distribution rules in the
settlement rule. There are already &v2& distribution rules in the
settlement rule.
The system expects a number less than &v3& for the number of similar
assets. This is expected since the system generates a distribution rule
in the settlement rule of the sender object for each similar asset that
is created and for each source assignment of the source structure that
is entered in the depreciation terms. The source structure that you
used has &v4& source assignments.
Enter a number that is less than or equal to &v3&. Or change the
settlement profile so that it allows a larger number of distribution
rules.

AY188
- The maximum number of distribution rules has been exceeded ?The SAP error message AY188, which states "The maximum number of distribution rules has been exceeded," typically occurs in the context of the SAP Controlling (CO) module, particularly when dealing with cost distribution or allocation processes. This error indicates that the number of distribution rules defined for a particular cost object or allocation process has surpassed the system's predefined limit.
Cause:
- Exceeding Limits: Each cost object or allocation process in SAP has a maximum number of distribution rules that can be defined. When you try to create or execute a distribution with more rules than allowed, this error is triggered.
- Configuration Settings: The limit on the number of distribution rules is often set in the system configuration. If your business processes require more rules than the current limit, you will encounter this error.
- Complex Allocation Structures: If your allocation structure is complex and involves multiple cost centers or internal orders, it may lead to exceeding the maximum number of rules.
Solution:
- Review Distribution Rules: Check the distribution rules you have set up. Simplifying the rules or consolidating them may help you stay within the limit.
- Increase the Limit: If your business processes genuinely require more distribution rules, you may need to adjust the configuration settings in SAP. This typically involves:
- Accessing the configuration settings in the SAP system (transaction code SPRO).
- Navigating to the relevant area for controlling (e.g., Cost Center Accounting or Internal Orders).
- Finding the setting for the maximum number of distribution rules and increasing it as necessary.
- Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or notes related to the specific module you are working with to understand the implications of changing these settings.
- Engage with SAP Support: If you are unsure about making changes to the configuration or if the problem persists, consider reaching out to SAP support for assistance.
