The following describes the most widely used system internationally, the 2-digit FDI World Dental Federation notation: The mouth is divided into four sections, known as quadrants. The horizontal line differentiates between the upper jaw and the lower jaw, and the vertical line differentiates between the right half of the jaw and the left half of the jaw. A two-digit number is assigned to each individual tooth. The digits are pronounced individually. Numbering runs from the center of the mouth to the back, starting with number 11 for the front tooth in the upper right jaw.
