  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WWP1023 - Worklist contains too many entries ?

Certainly! Here's a detailed explanation regarding the SAP error message WWP1023: Worklist contains too many entries:

    Error Message

WWP1023: Worklist contains too many entries

    Cause

This error occurs in SAP Web Dynpro applications, particularly in the context of the SAP NetWeaver Business Client or Web Dynpro ABAP applications that use worklists (e.g., in HR or workflow scenarios).

The worklist is a UI element that displays a list of tasks or items for the user to process. When the number of entries in the worklist exceeds a certain threshold, the system throws this error to prevent performance degradation or UI overload.

    Typical causes:

    • The worklist query returns an excessively large number of entries.
    • The default or configured maximum number of entries allowed in the worklist is exceeded.
    • Inefficient filtering or missing selection criteria in the worklist query.
    • The backend data source contains a very large volume of tasks or items.

    Solution

    1. Reduce the number of entries returned:

      • Apply more restrictive filters or selection criteria when fetching the worklist entries.
      • Encourage users to narrow down the search criteria (e.g., date ranges, status filters).
    2. Increase the maximum allowed entries (if business scenario requires):

      • The maximum number of entries allowed in the worklist is controlled by a parameter.
      • You can increase this limit by adjusting the parameter MAX_WORKLIST_ENTRIES or similar settings depending on the application.
      • For example, in some Web Dynpro applications, this can be done via customizing or by changing the value in the relevant configuration table or via SAP GUI transaction SE38 or SE80 by modifying the application parameters.
    3. Optimize backend queries:

      • Check the backend logic that fetches the worklist entries.
      • Optimize the query to improve performance and reduce the number of unnecessary entries.
    4. Pagination or lazy loading:

      • Implement or enable pagination or lazy loading in the UI to load entries in chunks rather than all at once.
    5. SAP Notes and Patches:

      • Check for relevant SAP Notes that address this issue or improve worklist handling.
      • Sometimes SAP releases patches or updates that improve performance or increase limits.

    Related Information

    • SAP Web Dynpro Worklist Control: The worklist control is designed to handle a manageable number of entries for usability and performance reasons.
    • Parameter Settings: The exact parameter name and location can vary depending on the SAP component or application.
    • Performance Considerations: Loading too many entries can degrade performance and user experience.
    • SAP Notes: Search the SAP Support Portal for notes related to WWP1023 or worklist performance.
    • Transaction Codes: Sometimes the worklist is related to workflow tasks (e.g., SBWP for SAP Business Workplace).
