What causes this issue?

You can only create, change, and delete follow-up/replacement material
relationships for variants of the generic material that are already
saved in the database.

System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

How to fix this error?

If you want to create follow-up/replacement material relationships for
variants that you have just created, but not saved yet in the material
master, you have to save the variants in the material master first. Then
start the maintenance transaction for the generic material again and go
to processing for follow-up/replacement materials.
