  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WRF_CHAR_VAL058 - Characteristic no longer exists; see long text ?

    SAP Error Message:
WRF_CHAR_VAL058Characteristic no longer exists; see long text

    Cause:

This error occurs when a characteristic that was previously assigned or referenced in a configuration, variant, or classification no longer exists in the system. This can happen due to:

    • The characteristic was deleted from the system.
    • The characteristic was renamed or changed in a way that it is no longer recognized.
    • The characteristic was removed from the class or configuration.
    • Data inconsistencies between the configuration and the master data (e.g., material master, variant configuration).

    Explanation:

In SAP Variant Configuration or Classification, characteristics are key attributes used to define variants or classify objects. If a characteristic is deleted or altered improperly, any existing references to it in configurations, classification assignments, or variant records become invalid, triggering this error.

    Solution:

    1. Check the Long Text of the Error Message:
The long text usually provides the exact characteristic number or name that is causing the issue. This helps identify which characteristic is missing.

    2. Verify Characteristic Existence:

      • Use transaction CT04 to check if the characteristic still exists.
      • If it does not exist, confirm whether it was deleted intentionally or by mistake.
    3. Restore or Recreate the Characteristic:

      • If the characteristic was deleted unintentionally, restore it from a backup or recreate it with the same name and properties.
      • If it was deleted intentionally, update or remove all references to this characteristic in configurations, classes, or variant records.
    4. Update or Correct Configuration/Classification:

      • Use transaction CU50 or CU51 to check and adjust configurations.
      • Use transaction CL20N to check class assignments and remove or replace the missing characteristic.
      • Adjust variant records or material master data to remove references to the missing characteristic.
    5. Check for Inconsistencies:

      • Run consistency checks for variant configuration using transaction CUA0 or CUA1.
      • Use report RCPRECON to reconcile variant configuration data.
    6. Transport and System Consistency:

      • If the issue appeared after a transport, verify that the characteristic was included in the transport.
      • Ensure that all dependent objects (classes, characteristics, configurations) are consistent across systems.

    Related Information:

    • Transactions:

      • CT04 – Maintain Characteristics
      • CL02 / CL20N – Change / Display Classes
      • CU50 / CU51 – Change Configurations

    • Notes and Documentation:

    • Best Practices:

      • Avoid deleting characteristics that are in use; instead, deactivate or replace them.
      • Always perform consistency checks after changes in characteristics or configurations.
      • Maintain proper transport management to ensure all related objects are moved together.

    Summary:

The error WRF_CHAR_VAL058 indicates that a characteristic referenced in your configuration or classification no longer exists. To resolve it, identify the missing characteristic, restore or remove references to it, and ensure data consistency across your variant configuration and classification data.
