What causes this issue?

There are several possible causes for this:

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

The specified material does not exist.
The specified material was not created in SAP Retail. To delete
materials created in manufacturing functions, start the manufacturing
reorganization run.
The specified material is not listed or has already been discontinued.
The specified material is not a single material.
(In Release 1.2 only single materials are processed)
There are deletion flags for the specified material.
There are no purchasing info records for vendor material
discontinuation
