  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WH021 - Movement type or batch missing ?

The SAP error message WH021, which states "Movement type or batch missing," typically occurs in the context of warehouse management and inventory movements. This error indicates that the system is unable to process a warehouse movement because either the movement type or the batch number required for the transaction is not specified or is missing.

    Causes:

    1. Missing Movement Type: The movement type is not specified in the transaction. Movement types are essential for defining the nature of the inventory movement (e.g., goods receipt, goods issue, transfer posting).

    2. Missing Batch Number: If the material being moved is batch-managed, a batch number must be provided. If it is not, the system will throw this error.

    3. Configuration Issues: There may be configuration issues in the warehouse management settings or material master data that prevent the movement type or batch from being recognized.

    4. User Input Error: The user may have inadvertently skipped entering the required fields in the transaction screen.

    Solutions:

    1. Check Movement Type: Ensure that the movement type is correctly specified in the transaction. You can do this by reviewing the transaction screen where the error occurred.

    2. Enter Batch Number: If the material is batch-managed, make sure to enter a valid batch number. You can check the available batches for the material in the material master or batch management screen.

    3. Review Material Master Data: Check the material master data to ensure that the material is set up correctly for batch management if applicable. This includes verifying that the batch management indicator is set.

    4. Configuration Review: If the issue persists, review the configuration settings in the SAP system related to warehouse management and movement types. Ensure that the movement types are correctly defined and that they are allowed for the specific materials and transactions.

    5. User Training: If user input errors are common, consider providing additional training or documentation to users on how to correctly enter data in the relevant transactions.

    6. Consult SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes or documentation that may address this specific error message or provide additional troubleshooting steps.

    Related Information:

    • Movement Types: Movement types are defined in SAP and determine how inventory is managed. Each movement type has specific settings and implications for inventory accounting.

    • Batch Management: Batch management is a feature in SAP that allows for tracking and managing inventory in batches, which is particularly useful for materials that have expiration dates or require quality control.

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as MIGO (Goods Movement), MB1A (Goods Issue), and others that may be involved in the process.
