  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WGDS_ENH103 - Generic material &1 does not provide a grouping number for the variants ?

    The SAP error message:

WGDS_ENH103: Generic material &1 does not provide a grouping number for the variants

    Cause:

This error occurs in the context of variant configuration and classification in SAP, specifically when dealing with generic materials and their variants. The system expects that the generic material (a material that represents a group of variants) provides a grouping number (also called a group number or grouping key) that links the generic material to its variants.

    • The grouping number is used to group variants under the generic material.
    • If the generic material does not have this grouping number maintained, the system cannot correctly assign or identify the variants related to it.
    • This typically happens during processes like classification, variant creation, or when using the SAP Variant Configuration (LO-VC) or Variant Material Management (VMM) functionalities.

    Solution:

To resolve the error, you need to ensure that the generic material has a grouping number maintained for its variants.

    Steps to fix:

    1. Check the generic material master:

      • Go to transaction MM02 (Change Material).
      • Enter the generic material number.
      • Navigate to the Classification tab.
    2. Maintain the grouping number:

      • In the classification data, check the characteristic that represents the grouping number.
      • Make sure the grouping number characteristic is assigned and has a valid value.
      • If the grouping number characteristic is missing, it may need to be added to the class assigned to the generic material.
    3. Check the class and characteristics:

      • Use transaction CL02 to check the class assigned to the generic material.
      • Verify that the characteristic for grouping number is assigned to the class.
      • If missing, add the characteristic and assign a grouping number value to the generic material.
    4. Check variant materials:

      • Ensure that variant materials are correctly linked to the generic material via the grouping number.
    5. Re-run the process:

      • After maintaining the grouping number, re-execute the process that triggered the error.

    Related Information:

    • Grouping Number / Group Number: This is a key concept in variant configuration and classification, used to group variants under a generic material.
    • Transactions:
      • MM02 - Change Material Master
      • CL02 - Change Class
      • CT04 - Change Characteristic
    • SAP Notes: Sometimes SAP releases notes or patches related to variant configuration errors. Check SAP Support Portal for notes related to WGDS_ENH103.
    • Variant Configuration (LO-VC): This error is common in scenarios involving variant configuration, where generic materials represent configurable products.
    • Material Variant Management (VMM): If you are using VMM, ensure that the grouping number is properly maintained as per VMM requirements.

    Summary:

The error WGDS_ENH103 indicates that the generic material lacks a grouping number necessary to link its variants. The solution is to maintain the grouping number characteristic in the classification data of the generic material, ensuring proper linkage between generic and variant materials.
