  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WE710 - EAN is in critical area of number range & & ?

    SAP Error Message:
WE710EAN is in critical area of number range & &

    Meaning / Cause:

The error message WE710 occurs in SAP when an EAN (European Article Number) or GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) being processed falls within a critical or nearly exhausted number range. This means that the number range interval assigned for EANs is close to running out of available numbers, and SAP is warning you to take action before the range is completely used up.

In SAP, number ranges are used to uniquely identify objects like EANs. When the system detects that the current number range interval is almost fully assigned (i.e., the remaining numbers are below a configured threshold), it issues this warning or error to prevent number exhaustion, which could cause failures in document processing or master data creation.

    When does it occur?

    • During creation or processing of material master data or related documents where EANs are assigned.
    • When the system tries to assign a new EAN number automatically.
    • When the number range interval for EANs is configured with a "critical area" threshold and the current number is within that threshold.

    Solution / How to resolve:

    1. Check Number Range Status:

      • Use transaction SNRO or SNRS to check the number range object for EANs.
      • The number range object for EANs is usually EAN or EAN13 (depending on system configuration).
      • Check the current interval and the current number assigned.
    2. Extend or Create a New Number Range Interval:

      • If the current number range interval is almost exhausted, create a new interval with a higher range.
      • Assign the new interval to the number range object.
      • Make sure the new interval does not overlap with existing intervals.
    3. Adjust Critical Area Threshold (Optional):

      • The critical area is a configurable threshold that triggers the warning.
      • You can adjust this threshold to a higher value if you want earlier warnings or to a lower value if you want to delay warnings.
      • This is done in the number range interval maintenance screen.
    4. Coordinate with Business / Master Data Team:

      • Inform the responsible team to plan for number range extension.
      • Avoid manual assignment of EANs that could cause overlaps.
    5. Check for Customizing or User Exits:

      • Sometimes, custom code or user exits might assign EANs.
      • Ensure that these are updated to handle new number ranges.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:

      • SNRO – Number Range Objects maintenance
      • SNRS – Number Range Intervals maintenance
      • MM02 – Change Material Master (to check or assign EANs)
      • WE02 / WE05 – IDoc monitoring (if EANs are processed via IDocs)
    • Number Range Object for EAN:

      • Usually named EAN or EAN13 depending on SAP version and configuration.
    • SAP Notes / Documentation:

      • Check SAP Notes related to EAN number range exhaustion.
      • SAP Help Portal for Material Master and EAN management.

    Summary:

    Aspect Details
Cause EAN number range is nearly exhausted (critical area reached)
Effect System issues warning/error WE710 to prevent number exhaustion
Solution Extend number range interval or create new interval; adjust critical threshold if needed
Tools SNRO, SNRS transactions for number range maintenance
Prevention Monitor number ranges regularly; plan extensions proactively
