  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message W5006 - Not possible to assign a number (Please check number assignment) ?

    SAP Error Message:
W5006 - Not possible to assign a number (Please check number assignment)

    Cause:

This warning message typically occurs when SAP is unable to assign a number to a document or object because the number range interval is either not defined, not assigned, or has been exhausted (no more numbers available). Number ranges are used in SAP to uniquely identify documents, master data, or other objects, and if the system cannot find a valid number within the assigned range, it throws this error.

    Common causes include:

    • Number range interval for the object is not defined or missing.
    • Number range interval is defined but not assigned to the relevant object or transaction.
    • Number range interval is defined and assigned but has reached its upper limit (all numbers used).
    • Number range object is set to external number assignment but no number is provided.
    • Customizing or configuration inconsistencies in number range setup.

    Solution:

    1. Check Number Range Intervals:

      • Go to the relevant number range maintenance transaction (e.g., SNRO or SNUM).
      • Enter the number range object related to the document or object type causing the error.
      • Verify if number range intervals exist and are valid.
    2. Check Number Range Assignment:

      • Ensure the number range object is correctly assigned to the application or transaction.
      • For example, in Financial Accounting, check number range assignment in transaction FBN1 or relevant customizing paths.
    3. Check Number Range Availability:

      • Verify if the current number range interval has available numbers.
      • If the interval is exhausted, create a new number range interval with a higher range.
    4. Adjust Number Range Settings:

      • If external number assignment is used, ensure the user provides a valid number.
      • If internal number assignment is used, ensure the number range intervals are properly maintained.
    5. Transport and Configuration:

      • If the system was recently transported or configured, verify that number range settings were correctly transported and activated.
    6. Example:

      • For Sales Documents, check number ranges in VOV8.
      • For FI documents, check in FBN1.
      • For Material documents, check in OMH6.
