Message type: E = Error
Message class: VSCE - Messages for SCE
Message number: 397
Message text: Object characteristic &1 only allows read access to IPC
The value of the specfied object characteristic cannot be overwritten in
the IPC Configuration Engine.
The object characteristic is copied to the knowledge base runtime
version, but dynamic value settings for this characteristic are not
transferred to the calling application (such as the customer orders).
If read-only access is sufficient for the model function, no further
adjustments are necessary. If, however, write access is required, it may
be necessary to revise the model for the IPC.
Example: Dynamic change to BOM material using STPO-IDNRK is not possible
in the IPC.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

VSCE397
- Object characteristic &1 only allows read access to IPC ?The SAP error message VSCE397 indicates that an object characteristic (in this case, represented by
&1
) is set to allow only read access in the Integrated Planning Component (IPC). This typically occurs when you are trying to modify or write to a characteristic that is configured to be read-only in the context of IPC.Cause:
- Read-Only Configuration: The characteristic in question is configured in such a way that it does not allow any modifications. This is often done for characteristics that are derived or calculated based on other data.
- Data Model Restrictions: The data model or the planning environment may have restrictions that prevent changes to certain characteristics to maintain data integrity.
- User Permissions: The user may not have the necessary permissions to modify the characteristic, even if it is not inherently read-only.
Solution:
Check Characteristic Configuration: Review the configuration of the characteristic in the SAP system. Ensure that it is set up correctly and that it should allow write access if that is the intended behavior.
- Go to the relevant configuration settings in the SAP system (e.g., transaction codes like
RSCUSTV10
for characteristics).Review Data Model: If the characteristic is part of a data model, check the model's design to see if it is intended to be read-only. If it is, consider whether you need to change your approach to data handling.
User Permissions: Verify that the user attempting to make the change has the appropriate permissions. This can be checked in the user roles and authorizations assigned to the user.
Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidance on the characteristic and its intended use within IPC.
Contact SAP Support: If you are unable to resolve the issue through the above steps, consider reaching out to SAP support for further assistance. They can provide insights based on the specific configuration and version of your SAP system.
