  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message VLA088 - Goods Mvmt will only be possible for integer quantity due to serial nos! ?

The SAP error message VLA088 indicates that there is an issue with the quantity of goods movement related to serial numbers. Specifically, it means that the system is configured to only allow integer quantities for items that are managed with serial numbers. This is a common scenario in inventory management where items are tracked individually by their serial numbers.

    Cause:

    1. Non-Integer Quantity: The most common cause of this error is that the quantity being entered for the goods movement is a decimal or fractional value, which is not allowed for items that are managed by serial numbers.
    2. Configuration Settings: The system may be configured to require integer quantities for items that are serialized, and any attempt to enter a non-integer quantity will trigger this error.
    3. Item Master Data: The material master data for the item may be set up in a way that requires integer quantities for serial number management.

    Solution:

    1. Check Quantity: Ensure that the quantity you are trying to enter is an integer. If you are trying to move a quantity of 1.5, for example, you will need to round it to 1 or 2.
    2. Review Serial Number Management: If you need to handle fractional quantities, consider whether the item should be managed by serial numbers. If not, you may need to change the configuration or the way the item is managed.
    3. Adjust Configuration: If the business process allows for it, you may need to adjust the configuration settings in the material master or the movement type settings to allow for non-integer quantities. However, this should be done with caution and in accordance with business requirements.
    4. Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or consult with your SAP support team to understand the implications of changing settings related to serial number management and quantities.

    Related Information:

    • Movement Types: Different movement types in SAP may have different rules regarding quantity handling. Ensure you are using the correct movement type for your transaction.
    • Material Master Data: Check the material master data for the item in question to see how it is configured regarding serial number management and quantity handling.
    • SAP Notes: Look for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this specific error or provide additional guidance on handling serialized items.

If the issue persists after checking these aspects, it may be beneficial to engage with your SAP support team or a consultant who specializes in SAP MM (Materials Management) for further assistance.
