Message text: Number of AAP
Application Assist Processor (AAP)
This is a processor with a number of functions disabled (interrupt
handling, some instructions) such that no full operating system can be
executed on the processor. However, z/OS can detect the presence of AAP
processors and will use them to execute Java code (and possibly other
similar code in the future).
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

VIRT308
- Number of AAP ?The SAP error message VIRT308 typically relates to issues with the number of Active Application Processes (AAP) in the SAP system. This error can occur when the number of active application processes exceeds the configured limit, which can lead to performance issues or the inability to process additional requests.
Cause:
- Exceeding Maximum AAP Limit: The system has a predefined limit for the number of active application processes. If the number of concurrent users or processes exceeds this limit, the error will be triggered.
- Configuration Issues: The configuration settings for the instance may not be optimized for the current workload, leading to insufficient resources.
- Long-Running Transactions: If there are transactions that take a long time to complete, they can occupy application processes and prevent new requests from being processed.
- Resource Bottlenecks: Insufficient hardware resources (CPU, memory) can lead to slow processing times, causing processes to remain active longer than expected.
Solution:
- Increase the Number of AAP: If the workload has increased, consider increasing the number of active application processes in the instance profile. This can be done by adjusting the parameter
rdisp/wp_no_dia
(for dialog work processes) andrdisp/wp_no_btc
(for background work processes).- Optimize Long-Running Transactions: Identify and optimize any long-running transactions that may be holding up application processes. This may involve analyzing performance and making adjustments to the code or database queries.
- Monitor System Performance: Use transaction codes like ST03N, ST06, or SM66 to monitor system performance and identify bottlenecks. This can help in understanding the load on the system and making necessary adjustments.
- Review Configuration: Ensure that the instance configuration is appropriate for the expected workload. This includes checking memory allocation and other relevant parameters.
- Load Balancing: If applicable, consider load balancing across multiple application servers to distribute the workload more evenly.
