SAP Error Message - Details

  • Message type: E = Error

  • Message class: VBDRV - Derivation of Batch Characteristics

  • Message number: 043

  • Message text: Expiration date was not calculated (date of production field is empty)

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

The system has derived the date of production, but has not yet derived
the shelf life expiration date. In this situation, the system tries to
calculate the shelf life expiration date. However, it has not
calculated this because the derived date of production is blank.

    System Response

The blank shelf life expiration date is the result of the derivation.
Whether an error or a warning message is issued when the blank field is
transferred to the receiving batch depends on:
The contents of the field in the receiving batch
The rule defined for the date of production in the condition record
The shelf life expiration date inherits the rule of the date of
production because it does not have its own rule.

    How to fix this error?

    Either:
Check the date of production and the shelf life expiration date
If necessary, enter these manually in the receiving batch
    Or:
Maintain the date of production in the sending batch/es and repeat the
    derivation.

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message VBDRV043 - Expiration date was not calculated (date of production field is empty) ?

The SAP error message VBDRV043 indicates that the expiration date for a product could not be calculated because the "date of production" field is empty. This error typically occurs in the context of managing batch management and expiration dates for materials in SAP.

    Cause:

    1. Empty Date of Production: The primary cause of this error is that the "date of production" field for the batch or material is not filled in. This date is essential for calculating the expiration date based on the shelf life defined for the material.
    2. Configuration Issues: There may be issues with the configuration of the material master or batch management settings that prevent the date of production from being populated.
    3. Data Entry Errors: During the creation or processing of batches, the date of production may not have been entered due to oversight or incorrect data entry.

    Solution:

    1. Check Batch Data:

      • Go to the batch management screen and check the batch details for the material in question. Ensure that the "date of production" field is filled in.
      • If it is empty, you will need to enter the correct date of production.
    2. Update Material Master:

      • If the material is set up to require a date of production, ensure that the material master data is correctly configured. You can do this by navigating to the material master record and checking the relevant views (e.g., Basic Data, Plant Data, etc.).
    3. Review Shelf Life Settings:

      • Check the shelf life settings for the material. Ensure that the shelf life is defined and that the system is configured to calculate expiration dates based on the date of production.
    4. Data Entry Procedures:

      • Review the procedures for entering batch data to ensure that users are prompted to enter the date of production when creating or processing batches.
    5. Consult Documentation:

      • If you are unsure about the configuration or data entry processes, consult the SAP documentation or your organization's SAP support team for guidance.

    Related Information:

    • Batch Management: This feature in SAP allows for tracking and managing inventory at the batch level, which is crucial for industries like pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and chemicals.
    • Expiration Date Calculation: The expiration date is typically calculated based on the date of production and the shelf life defined in the material master. If the date of production is missing, the system cannot perform this calculation.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this error or provide additional guidance on batch management and expiration date calculations.

By addressing the empty date of production and ensuring proper configuration and data entry practices, you should be able to resolve the VBDRV043 error.
