  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message USMD2136 - Changes not saved; assign a change request first ?

The SAP error message USMD2136 indicates that changes made in the system have not been saved because a change request has not been assigned. This is a common issue in SAP systems, particularly when working with transport requests and change management.

    Cause:

The error occurs when you attempt to make changes to objects in the SAP system without having an active change request assigned to those changes. In SAP, changes to objects (like customizing settings, development objects, etc.) must be tracked and managed through change requests to ensure proper transport and version control.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, you need to follow these steps:

    1. Create or Assign a Change Request:

      • Before making changes, ensure that you have a change request created. You can do this by navigating to the relevant transaction (e.g., SE09 or SE10) and creating a new transport request.
      • If you already have a change request, make sure it is assigned to your user profile.
    2. Assign the Change Request:

      • Once you have a change request, you can assign it to your changes. This is typically done in the change management screen where you can select the change request from a dropdown or input field.
    3. Make Your Changes:

      • After assigning the change request, proceed with your changes. The system should now allow you to save your changes without encountering the error.
    4. Save Changes:

      • After making the necessary changes, save them. The changes will now be linked to the assigned change request.

    Related Information:

    • Transport Management System (TMS): Understanding how the TMS works in SAP can help you manage change requests and transports effectively.
    • User Authorizations: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to create and assign change requests. If you lack permissions, contact your SAP administrator.
    • Change Request Types: Familiarize yourself with different types of change requests (e.g., customizing requests, workbench requests) and their purposes.
    • Documentation: Always document your changes and the associated change requests for future reference and compliance.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the USMD2136 error and successfully save your changes in the SAP system.
