  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message USMD1538 - Data model &, entity type &2: Invalid use of keys in hierarchy ?

The SAP error message USMD1538 typically occurs in the context of SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) when there is an issue with the hierarchy structure of a data model. This error indicates that there is an invalid use of keys in a hierarchy for a specific entity type. Here’s a breakdown of the cause, potential solutions, and related information:

    Cause:

    1. Invalid Key Configuration: The error often arises when the keys defined for a hierarchy node do not conform to the expected structure or rules defined in the data model. This can happen if:

      • The key fields are not properly defined in the hierarchy.
      • There are inconsistencies in the hierarchy levels.
      • The hierarchy is trying to reference keys that do not exist or are not valid for the entity type.
    2. Data Integrity Issues: If the data being processed has integrity issues, such as missing or incorrect key values, it can lead to this error.

    3. Model Configuration Errors: There may be configuration issues in the data model itself, such as incorrect settings for the hierarchy or entity type.

    Solution:

    1. Check Hierarchy Configuration:

      • Review the hierarchy configuration for the specific entity type in the data model. Ensure that all key fields are correctly defined and that they adhere to the expected structure.
      • Verify that the hierarchy levels are correctly set up and that there are no missing or invalid references.
    2. Data Validation:

      • Validate the data being processed to ensure that all key fields are populated correctly and that there are no inconsistencies.
      • Check for any orphaned nodes in the hierarchy that may not have valid parent-child relationships.
    3. Adjust Data Model Settings:

      • If necessary, adjust the settings in the data model to ensure that the hierarchy is correctly defined. This may involve modifying the entity type or the hierarchy settings.
    4. Consult Documentation:

      • Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidelines on configuring hierarchies in your version of SAP MDG. This can provide insights into best practices and common pitfalls.
    5. Testing:

      • After making changes, conduct thorough testing to ensure that the hierarchy functions as expected and that the error does not recur.

    Related Information:

    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this specific error or provide additional troubleshooting steps.
