This typically occurs in SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC) or SAP BW (Business Warehouse) environments when working with planning layouts that have specific configurations.
Cause:
The error arises when:
- Complex Lead Columns: The layout you are trying to use has lead columns that are defined as complex. Complex lead columns can include calculations, aggregations, or other advanced features that make it difficult for the system to insert new rows.

Solution:
To resolve the UPWB161 error, consider the following steps:
Review the Layout Configuration:
- Check the configuration of the lead columns in the layout. If they are set as complex, consider simplifying them if possible.
- Ensure that the lead columns are defined correctly and are not causing conflicts with the data model.
Modify the Layout:
- If feasible, modify the layout to remove or simplify the complex lead columns. This may involve changing the way data is aggregated or calculated in those columns.
Check Data Model:
- Review the underlying data model to ensure that it supports the operations you are trying to perform. Make sure that the data model allows for the insertion of rows in the context of the lead columns.
Consult Documentation:
- Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidance on handling complex lead columns and layout configurations.
Testing:
- After making changes, test the layout again to see if the error persists. If it does, further investigation into the specific configurations and data model may be necessary.
