Message text: Too many characteristic combinations for manual planning, see long text
At present only &V1& characteristic combinations can be edited per
manual planning call. However, for the action you desired, &V2&
characteristic combinations would have had to be edited. You have used
a selection that was not restricted enough and possibly in addition set
the indicator 'from possible characteristic combinations' in the
planning layout.
Manual planning cannot be executed.
Restrict the selection sufficiently, in particular for the
characteristics in the header area and in the lead columns of the
planning layout.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

- Too many characteristic combinations for manual planning, see long text ?The SAP error message UPP_PP_K009, which states "Too many characteristic combinations for manual planning," typically occurs in the context of SAP's Advanced Planning and Optimization (APO) or SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP) when there are too many combinations of characteristics for a planning object. This can happen in manual planning scenarios where the system is unable to handle the volume of data due to performance limitations.
Cause:
- High Cardinality of Characteristics: The error is often caused by having too many characteristics or characteristic values defined for a planning object. When the combinations of these characteristics exceed a certain threshold, the system cannot process them efficiently.
- Planning Area Configuration: The configuration of the planning area may lead to an excessive number of combinations. This can happen if the planning area is not optimized for the specific planning scenario.
- Data Volume: A large volume of data being processed in a single planning view can also trigger this error.
Solution:
Reduce Characteristic Combinations:
- Review the characteristics used in the planning area and consider reducing the number of characteristics or their values.
- Limit the number of characteristics that are relevant for manual planning to only those that are necessary.
Optimize Planning Area:
- Check the configuration of the planning area and ensure it is optimized for the specific planning needs. This may involve adjusting the characteristics and key figures used.
- Consider creating a new planning area with a more manageable set of characteristics if necessary.
Use Aggregation:
- If possible, aggregate data to reduce the number of combinations. This can help in managing the data volume and improving performance.
Split Planning Views:
- If the planning view is too complex, consider splitting it into multiple simpler views that can be managed more easily.
Check System Settings:
- Review system settings and parameters related to planning and performance. Adjusting these settings may help in handling larger datasets.
Consult Documentation:
- Refer to SAP documentation or notes related to this error for any specific recommendations or updates that may address the issue.
