  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message UPP_LB035 - Characteristic &1 was put into the header area ?

The SAP error message UPP_LB035 indicates that a characteristic has been placed in the header area of a document or transaction, which is not allowed in the context of the specific process you are working with. This typically occurs in the context of SAP's Advanced Planning and Optimization (APO) or similar modules where characteristics are expected to be assigned to items rather than the header.

    Cause:

    1. Incorrect Configuration: The characteristic in question may have been incorrectly configured to be assigned to the header instead of the item level.
    2. Data Entry Error: During the creation or modification of a document, a characteristic that should be at the item level was inadvertently assigned to the header.
    3. Master Data Issues: The master data for the material or product may not be set up correctly, leading to characteristics being assigned incorrectly.

    Solution:

    1. Check Configuration: Review the configuration settings for the characteristics in the relevant customizing settings (transaction SPRO). Ensure that the characteristics are defined correctly and are intended for item-level assignment.
    2. Review Document Structure: When creating or modifying the document, ensure that characteristics are assigned to the correct level (item level) and not the header level.
    3. Correct Master Data: If the issue is related to master data, check the material master or product master data to ensure that characteristics are assigned correctly.
    4. Use Transaction Codes: Utilize relevant transaction codes (like MM02 for material master) to check and modify the characteristics assigned to the material or product.
    5. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidelines on how characteristics should be assigned in your particular scenario.
