  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

If transaction data is requested in change mode, this data must be
exclusively locked for a user. The lock server is currently processing
other lock requests for planning area '&V1&' and can therefore not
    answer the current lock request.
When this situaton occurs the system waits for a number of seconds and
and then starts the lock request again. The lock server could still not
answer the request even after this waiting time.

    System Response

The requested data cannot be edited in the change mode at present.

    How to fix this error?

If this lock message occurs often then this points to a general capacity
    overload of the lock server.
As a rule, the situation can only be avoided by making selections
simpler. Consult note 635244 on this.
    Background Information on Locks
The system locks the data that is described by the selection of the
planning package. However, the following rules apply in addition for
    manual planning:
The selection comes from the planning layout for data columns and
individually defined rows in the planning layout.
In the remaining cases the selection comes from the planning package.
If variables are contained in the planning level or planning layout,
these are replaced for the determination of the selection.
Note that in Customizing, for variables of the type hierarchy node,
attribute, and authorization, the replacement of variables can lead to
    many individual characteristic values:
For hierarchy nodes the system determines all characteristic values for
the hierarchy-defining characteristic, which are contained in the
subtree and puts these in the selection.
For attribute values the system reads the master data for the attribute
and puts this in the selection.
For authorizations, the authorization object is read and the related
master data is read with the selection options of the authorization
object. The master data is then transferred into the selection.
Very complex selections can be formed in this way, which lead to a high
    load of the lock server.

    Procedure for System Administrators

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message UPC091 - Capacity overload of lock server for planning area &1, see long text ?

The SAP error message UPC091 indicates a capacity overload of the lock server for a specific planning area. This typically occurs in the context of SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP) or SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization (APO) when the system is unable to handle the number of concurrent requests or locks being placed on the planning area.

    Cause:

    1. High Concurrent Requests: Too many users or processes are trying to access or modify the same planning area simultaneously, leading to a lock contention.
    2. Lock Table Size: The lock table may be too small to accommodate the number of locks being requested.
    3. Long-Running Transactions: Some transactions may be holding locks for an extended period, preventing other transactions from acquiring the necessary locks.
    4. System Configuration: The system may not be optimally configured to handle the expected load, leading to performance issues.

    Solution:

    1. Reduce Concurrent Access: Try to limit the number of users or processes accessing the planning area at the same time. This can be done by scheduling heavy processing jobs during off-peak hours.
    2. Increase Lock Table Size: If you have access to system configuration, consider increasing the size of the lock table to accommodate more locks.
    3. Optimize Long-Running Transactions: Identify and optimize any long-running transactions that may be holding locks unnecessarily. This may involve reviewing the logic of the transactions or breaking them into smaller, more manageable parts.
    4. Monitor System Performance: Use SAP transaction codes like SM12 (to view locks) and SM21 (to check system logs) to monitor and analyze lock situations and system performance.
    5. Check for System Updates: Ensure that your SAP system is up to date with the latest patches and updates, as performance improvements and bug fixes may help alleviate the issue.
    6. Consult SAP Notes: Look for relevant SAP Notes that may address this specific error or provide additional guidance on configuration and performance tuning.

    Related Information:

    • SAP Documentation: Refer to the official SAP documentation for IBP or APO for detailed information on lock management and performance tuning.
    • SAP Community: Engage with the SAP Community forums to see if other users have encountered similar issues and what solutions they have implemented.
    • Performance Monitoring Tools: Utilize SAP's performance monitoring tools to analyze system performance and identify bottlenecks.

If the problem persists after trying the above solutions, it may be necessary to involve your SAP Basis team or SAP support for further investigation and assistance.
