  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message S1420 - Action started ?

The SAP error message S1420, which states "Action started," typically indicates that a process or action has been initiated within the SAP system. This message is not necessarily an error but rather an informational message that signifies that a certain action is in progress.

    Cause:

    1. Process Initiation: The message is generated when a user or system action is initiated, such as running a report, executing a transaction, or starting a batch job.
    2. Long-Running Processes: If the action takes a significant amount of time to complete, the system may display this message to inform the user that the action has started but is still in progress.

    Solution:

    1. Wait for Completion: If you see this message, it is usually best to wait for the action to complete. Depending on the complexity of the task, it may take some time.
    2. Check Status: If the action seems to be taking too long, you can check the status of the process in the system. This can often be done through transaction codes like SM37 (for job monitoring) or SM21 (for system logs).
    3. Review Logs: If the action does not complete or if you encounter further issues, review the application logs or system logs for any additional error messages or warnings that may provide more context.
    4. Consult Documentation: If you are unsure about the action that was initiated, refer to the relevant SAP documentation or consult with your SAP administrator for guidance.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with transaction codes like SM37 (Job Monitoring), SM21 (System Log), and ST22 (Dump Analysis) to troubleshoot further.
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues related to the specific action you are trying to perform.
    • Performance Tuning: If you frequently encounter long-running actions, consider discussing performance tuning options with your SAP Basis team.
