  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message RSOS018 - Indexing cannot be performed; change the index status ?

The SAP error message RSOS018 indicates that indexing cannot be performed because the index status is not appropriate for the operation you are trying to execute. This typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP HANA when there are issues with the data indexing process.

    Cause:

The error can be caused by several factors, including:

    1. Index Status: The index may be in a status that does not allow for indexing operations. For example, it could be in a "locked" state or marked as "inactive."
    2. Data Load Issues: If there are ongoing data loads or if the data is not yet fully processed, the index may not be available for updates.
    3. System Configuration: There may be configuration issues or settings that prevent the index from being updated.
    4. Database Issues: There could be underlying database issues that affect the indexing process.

    Solution:

To resolve the RSOS018 error, you can follow these steps:

    1. Check Index Status:

      • Use transaction code RSA1 to access the Data Warehousing Workbench.
      • Navigate to the InfoProvider and check the status of the index. Ensure that it is set to "active" and not locked.
    2. Activate the Index:

      • If the index is inactive, you can try to activate it. Right-click on the InfoObject or InfoProvider and select the option to activate the index.
    3. Check for Ongoing Data Loads:

      • Ensure that there are no ongoing data loads that might be locking the index. You can check the process chains or data load monitor to see if any data loads are currently running.
    4. Rebuild the Index:

      • If the index is corrupted or not functioning correctly, you may need to rebuild it. This can usually be done through the Data Warehousing Workbench or relevant transaction codes.
    5. Check System Logs:

      • Review the system logs (transaction code SLG1) for any additional error messages or warnings that might provide more context about the issue.
    6. Consult Documentation:

      • Refer to SAP documentation or notes related to the specific version of SAP BW or HANA you are using for any known issues or additional troubleshooting steps.
    7. Contact SAP Support:
