  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message R7251 - A query element with technical name &1 already exists ?

The SAP error message R7251, which states "A query element with technical name &1 already exists," typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP BI (Business Intelligence) when you are trying to create or modify a query in the Query Designer or BEx Query Designer. This error indicates that there is already an existing query element (like a characteristic, key figure, or variable) with the same technical name as the one you are trying to create.

    Cause:

    1. Duplicate Technical Name: The most common cause of this error is that you are attempting to create a new query element (e.g., a calculated key figure, restricted key figure, or variable) with a technical name that is already in use by another element in the same query or in the same InfoProvider.
    2. Copying Elements: If you are copying elements from another query or InfoProvider, the technical names may conflict with existing elements.
    3. Transport Issues: If you have transported objects from one system to another, there may be conflicts with existing elements.

    Solution:

    1. Check Existing Elements: Review the existing query elements in the Query Designer to see if an element with the same technical name already exists. You can do this by navigating through the query structure and checking the properties of each element.
    2. Rename the New Element: If you find that the technical name is already in use, consider renaming the new query element to a unique name that does not conflict with existing elements.
    3. Delete or Modify Existing Elements: If the existing element is not needed, you can delete or modify it to free up the technical name for your new element.
    4. Use Unique Naming Conventions: To avoid such conflicts in the future, establish a naming convention for your query elements that ensures uniqueness.
    5. Check Transport Requests: If the issue arose after a transport, check the transport requests to ensure that there are no conflicts with existing objects in the target system.
