Message text: The mean value is outside the tolerance range
The number of measured values outside the tolerance range is either
zero, or the mean value breaks the opposing tolerance limit to the
measured values.
Check and, if necessary, correct your entries for the mean value and
the number of measured values above or below the tolerance range.
Note
If the valuation of the characteristic or partial sample is based on
thenumber of nonconforming units, you should enter the number of
measured values above or below the tolerance limit. If the number of
nonconforming units is zero, the characteristic or partial sample will
be accepted.
For an inspected sample scope of 1, the number of measured values above
or below the tolerance limit is taken, if the mean value is outside a
tolerance limit.

QE412
- The mean value is outside the tolerance range ?The SAP error message QE412, "The mean value is outside the tolerance range," typically occurs in the context of quality management (QM) when performing quality inspections or evaluations. This error indicates that the calculated mean value of a set of measurements does not fall within the predefined tolerance limits set for that particular characteristic.
Cause:
- Measurement Variability: The measurements taken during the inspection may have significant variability, leading to a mean value that exceeds the acceptable limits.
- Incorrect Tolerance Settings: The tolerance limits defined in the material master or inspection plan may be too strict or incorrectly set.
- Measurement Errors: There may be errors in the measurement process, such as faulty equipment or incorrect measurement techniques.
- Sample Size: A small sample size may lead to a skewed mean value that does not accurately represent the population.
Solution:
- Review Tolerance Settings: Check the tolerance limits defined in the inspection plan or material master. Ensure they are appropriate for the product and process.
- Re-evaluate Measurements: Review the measurements taken to ensure they were performed correctly. If necessary, repeat the measurements with calibrated equipment.
- Increase Sample Size: If the sample size is small, consider increasing it to get a more reliable mean value.
- Investigate Variability: Analyze the process to identify sources of variability. This may involve looking at the production process, equipment, or operator performance.
- Adjust Inspection Plan: If the mean value is consistently outside the tolerance range, it may be necessary to adjust the inspection plan or the process to bring the mean value within acceptable limits.
