  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message QA142 - To activate QM, the inspection stock for the material must be empty ?

The SAP error message QA142 indicates that you are trying to activate Quality Management (QM) for a material, but the inspection stock for that material is not empty. This is a common issue when dealing with materials that have been subject to quality inspections.

    Cause:

The error occurs because SAP requires that the inspection stock for a material must be empty before you can activate QM. This is to ensure that there are no pending quality inspections or stock that could interfere with the QM processes. The inspection stock is typically used to hold materials that are under inspection and cannot be used in production or sales until the inspection is complete.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, you need to ensure that the inspection stock for the material is empty. Here are the steps you can take:

    1. Check Inspection Stock: Use transaction code MMBE to check the stock levels for the material. Look specifically for the inspection stock.

    2. Clear Inspection Stock:

      • If there are materials in inspection stock, you will need to either:
        • Post the results of the inspection: If the inspection is complete, you can post the results and move the stock to unrestricted stock or blocked stock as appropriate.
        • Transfer or scrap the stock: If the materials are not suitable for use, you may need to transfer them to blocked stock or scrap them.
    3. Use Transaction Codes:

      • Use QA32 to process the inspection lots and post the results.
      • Use MB1A or MB1B to transfer or scrap the stock if necessary.
    4. Re-attempt Activation: Once the inspection stock is empty, you can attempt to activate QM for the material again.

    Related Information:

    • Quality Management (QM): This module in SAP is used to manage quality control processes, including inspections, quality planning, and quality notifications.
    • Inspection Stock: This is a special stock type in SAP that holds materials that are undergoing quality inspection. It is not available for use until the inspection is completed.
    • Material Master: Ensure that the material master record is correctly set up for QM. You can check this in transaction code MM02.

    Additional Tips:

    • Always ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to perform stock movements and quality inspections.
    • If you are unsure about the status of the inspection stock, consult with your quality management team or SAP support for assistance.
    • Document any changes made to the stock for future reference and compliance purposes.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the QA142 error and successfully activate QM for the material in question.
