Message text: Thermal expansion coefficient is required for Material
"Chemical" products (Product type 3 in the conversion group, which
corresponds to API/ASTM tables 6C, 24C, 54C, 60C)) require a fixed
density/gravity and thermal expansion coefficient before quantities for
such products can be calculated from mass to volume or from volume to
mass.
This data has to be maintained correctly for chemical products in the
material master.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
The API c-code routines of type C (6C, 24C, 54C, 60C) should be used:Either maintain a thermal expansion coefficient or change the conversion
group to a different product type, other than chemical.

O3076
- Thermal expansion coefficient is required for Material ?The SAP error message O3076, which states "Thermal expansion coefficient is required for Material," typically occurs in the context of materials management or when dealing with material properties in SAP, particularly in the context of engineering or manufacturing processes. This error indicates that the system requires a thermal expansion coefficient for a specific material, which is necessary for calculations related to thermal effects on materials.
Cause:
The error is caused by the absence of a defined thermal expansion coefficient for the material in question. This coefficient is essential for various engineering calculations, especially in scenarios involving temperature changes that can affect the dimensions and properties of materials.
Solution:
To resolve this error, you need to define the thermal expansion coefficient for the affected material. Here are the steps to do this:
Access Material Master Data:
- Go to the transaction code
MM02
(Change Material) orMM01
(Create Material) in SAP.Select the Appropriate Views:
- Choose the relevant views that pertain to the material properties. This may include the "Basic Data," "Engineering Data," or "Material Properties" views, depending on your SAP configuration.
Enter Thermal Expansion Coefficient:
- Locate the field for the thermal expansion coefficient. This may be labeled as "Thermal Expansion Coefficient" or similar.
- Enter the appropriate value for the thermal expansion coefficient. This value is typically expressed in units such as parts per million per degree Celsius (ppm/°C).
Save Changes:
- After entering the required information, save the changes to the material master record.
Re-run the Process:
- After updating the material master, re-run the process that triggered the error to verify that the issue has been resolved.
Related Information:
Thermal Expansion Coefficient: This is a material property that quantifies how much a material expands per degree of temperature increase. Different materials have different coefficients, and this information is crucial for engineering applications where temperature variations are expected.
Material Master Data: The material master in SAP contains all the information a company needs to manage a material. This includes basic data, purchasing data, sales data, and various technical specifications.
Engineering and Manufacturing Processes: In industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and automotive, understanding the thermal properties of materials is critical for product design and quality assurance.
SAP Documentation: For more detailed information, refer to SAP's official documentation or help resources related to material management and engineering data.
By following these steps and understanding the context of the error, you should be able to resolve the O3076 error effectively.
