  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message MU118 - Changes to an EAN record for UoM &1 are not permitted for material &2. ?

The SAP error message MU118 indicates that changes to an EAN (European Article Number) record for a specific Unit of Measure (UoM) are not permitted for a given material. This error typically arises when there are restrictions on modifying certain attributes of a material that is already in use or has been processed in transactions.

    Cause:

    1. Material Status: The material may be in a status that does not allow changes, such as being locked for changes or being used in active transactions.
    2. Existing Data: The EAN record for the specified UoM may already be linked to existing stock, sales orders, or other documents, preventing modifications.
    3. Configuration Settings: There may be configuration settings in the system that restrict changes to EANs for certain materials or UoMs.
    4. Authorization Issues: The user may not have the necessary permissions to make changes to the EAN records.

    Solution:

    1. Check Material Status: Verify the status of the material in question. If it is locked or in use, you may need to unlock it or wait until the transactions are completed.
    2. Review Existing Transactions: Check if there are any existing transactions (like sales orders, deliveries, etc.) that are using the material with the specified UoM. If so, you may need to resolve those transactions before making changes.
    3. Consult Configuration: Review the configuration settings related to EAN management in the material master. Ensure that the settings allow for changes to EANs for the specified UoM.
    4. User Authorization: Ensure that the user attempting to make the changes has the necessary authorizations. If not, contact your SAP security administrator to obtain the required permissions.
    5. Use Alternative UoM: If changes to the EAN for the specified UoM are not possible, consider using an alternative UoM that does not have these restrictions.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: You may use transaction codes like MM02 (Change Material) to attempt to modify the material master data, but be aware of the restrictions.
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues or patches related to this error message. SAP frequently updates its knowledge base with solutions for common problems.
