The SAP error message ME124 ("Material not subject to inventory management in plant & (Pl. check your input)") typically occurs when you are trying to perform a transaction related to a material that is not set up for inventory management in the specified plant. This can happen in various scenarios, such as when creating purchase orders, goods receipts, or other inventory-related transactions.
Cause:
- Material Master Settings: The material in question may not have been set up for inventory management in the specific plant. This can happen if the material type is not configured for inventory management or if the relevant plant data is missing.
- Material Type: Certain material types (like services or non-stock materials) are not subject to inventory management.

Solution:
Check Material Master Data:
- Go to the Material Master (Transaction Code: MM03) and check the material's data for the specific plant.
- Ensure that the "Plant Data / Storage" view is maintained and that the material is set up for inventory management.
Verify Material Type:
- Check if the material type assigned to the material is appropriate for inventory management. You can do this by looking at the material type configuration in the system (Transaction Code: OMS2).
- If the material type is not suitable, you may need to create a new material with the correct type or change the existing material type if possible.
Maintain Plant-Specific Data:
- If the material is not set up for the specific plant, you may need to create or update the plant-specific data for the material (Transaction Code: MM01 or MM02).

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
