  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message L3396 - Item not handled in batches and batch split item cannot be edited ?

The SAP error message L3396, "Item not handled in batches and batch split item cannot be edited," typically occurs in the context of inventory management and batch handling in SAP. This error indicates that there is an issue with the handling of batch-managed items during a transaction, such as a goods movement or a sales order processing.

    Cause:

    1. Batch Management Configuration: The item in question may not be configured to handle batches properly. This can happen if the material master data does not have batch management enabled.
    2. Batch Split Items: The error often arises when there are batch split items involved in the transaction, and the system is unable to process them due to configuration or data issues.
    3. Transaction Type: The transaction being performed may not support batch handling for the specific item or may not allow editing of batch split items.
    4. Stock Type: The stock type of the item (e.g., unrestricted, quality inspection, blocked) may not be compatible with the operation being performed.

    Solution:

    1. Check Material Master Data: Ensure that the material master for the item is correctly configured for batch management. You can do this by checking the "Basic Data" and "Sales" views in the material master.

      • Go to transaction MM03 (Display Material) and verify the settings under the "Plant Data/Storage" view.
    2. Review Batch Management Settings: Ensure that the batch management settings are correctly configured in the material master and that the item is set to be managed in batches.

    3. Check Transaction Type: Verify that the transaction you are trying to perform supports batch handling. If it does not, you may need to adjust your process or use a different transaction.

    4. Batch Split Handling: If you are dealing with batch split items, ensure that the system allows editing of these items. You may need to check the configuration settings related to batch splits in the relevant customizing settings (transaction SPRO).

    5. Stock Type Verification: Ensure that the stock type of the item is appropriate for the transaction. If the item is in a stock type that does not allow the operation (e.g., blocked stock), you may need to move it to a different stock type.

    6. Consult Documentation: If the issue persists, consult SAP documentation or reach out to your SAP support team for further assistance. They may have specific insights based on your system configuration.

    Related Information:

    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this specific error or provide additional troubleshooting steps.
    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as MB1A, MB1B, MB1C, and MIGO for goods movements, as well as MM03 for material master data.
    • Batch Management Documentation: Review SAP's documentation on batch management for a deeper understanding of how batch handling works within the system.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify the root cause of the error and implement a solution to resolve it.
