  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message HRPAYDESV169 - Timeout in RFC connection & ?

The SAP error message HRPAYDESV169: Timeout in RFC connection typically indicates that there is a timeout issue when trying to establish or maintain a Remote Function Call (RFC) connection between SAP systems or between an SAP system and an external system. This can occur in various scenarios, such as during data transfer, when calling remote functions, or when executing payroll processes.

    Causes:

    1. Network Issues: Poor network connectivity or high latency can lead to timeouts.
    2. System Performance: If the SAP system is under heavy load or if the server is slow, it may not respond in a timely manner.
    3. Configuration Issues: Incorrect RFC destination settings or parameters can lead to connection problems.
    4. Firewall or Security Settings: Firewalls or security settings may block or delay the RFC connection.
    5. Long-Running Processes: If the called function takes too long to execute, it may exceed the timeout settings.

    Solutions:

    1. Check Network Connectivity: Ensure that the network connection between the systems is stable and has low latency. Use tools like ping or traceroute to diagnose network issues.
    2. Increase Timeout Settings: You can increase the timeout settings for the RFC connection in the SAP system. This can be done in transaction SM59:
      • Go to the RFC destination in question.
      • Check the "Technical Settings" tab.
      • Adjust the "Timeout" settings (e.g., increase the "Connection Timeout" and "Response Timeout").
    3. Monitor System Performance: Use transaction ST03N or SM66 to monitor system performance and identify any bottlenecks. If the system is overloaded, consider optimizing performance or scheduling jobs during off-peak hours.
    4. Review RFC Configuration: Ensure that the RFC destination is correctly configured. Check for any errors in the configuration and correct them as needed.
    5. Check Firewall Settings: Ensure that firewalls or security settings are not blocking the RFC connection. Consult with your network/security team if necessary.
    6. Optimize Long-Running Processes: If a specific function is taking too long, consider optimizing the code or breaking it into smaller, more manageable parts.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:
      • SM59: To manage RFC destinations.
      • ST22: To check for dumps that may provide more context on the error.
      • SM21: To view system logs for any related error messages.
